New technologies

90497New technologies are enabling exciting developments in treating and curing human diseases. These include neuroscience (the understanding of mental processes and behaviour), nanotechnology (science of very tiny matter), biological research into ageing and developments in computing and information technology.

Yet these same technologies are also likely to be used for far more than just making us well. They can also be used to make us better than well. They may allow us to re-engineer and change our human nature, to vastly prolong our lives, or to control our minds through mind pills and to remake existing humans through mixing man and machine.

As science fiction fast becomes science fact, CARE has resources to inform Christians about some of the challenges facing human dignity from nanotechnology, cybernetics, neuroscience and computing, so that we are better equipped to engage in debate on their use in society now and in the future.
